ok which ones are better shoulder bags or like tote purse bags for school..?

i dont like backpacks a lot and i was wondering which causes less pain cuz i have a shoulder and back problem and i dont want to make it worse so which is better tote purse bags or shoulder backpacks. last year i used a tote purse bag like from hollister but its gotten really common and i dont want hollister or american eagle or aeropostale or any like surfer brands like from pac sun so is there anywhere else and which is less pain and stress for my back thanks..
